Falsettos

Every year at The University of Alabama, The 3rd year Direction student prepares their "Decorum" show-- their capstone project. They are allotted a larger budget than typical, and if they choose, they are allowed to do a musical.

Falsettos is essentially an opera, revolving around Marvin, his lover, Whizzer, his ex-wife, Trina, Psychiatrist, Mendel and son, Jason.

The show takes place in about a dozen places in New York in the late 70's and early 80's.

The Scenic Designer really wanted to use jewel tones to evoke the saturated colors of the time.

The goal of the lighting design was to effectively set the tone of the music without making anything feel too expressly realistic. The saturation of the color should appear vibrant without feeling heavy handed, and the composition should feel suggested, yet finished.

I felt I was walking quite a fine line between antithetical goals at times, which is really a testament to the depth of the score.
