Because of time and labor constraints, I used a kit-style method for some of the more detail-oriented pieces. I included a composite drawing for final assembly.

The total budget for the show was $5,000, which was just a little more than enough. We were actually able to invest some of that money back into our scenery stock in the form of new prehung exterior doors.

Challenges: The Key attribute of this set, according to the designer, was texture. He felt that the story took place in a relatively sterile environment, the day room of an old house, and to combat that he wanted to give every surface texture, to lend visual credence to the plight of the characters as they cling to their home.

We used a common scenic dope on all of the interior walls to imitate the acoustic treatment on many homes build in the last half century.

For the exterior walls we used 3/4" EPS foam. we carved out the grout lines with a hot knife, and sprayed the surface of the foam with diluted acetone to create the rock-like texture.

The wooden ceiling joists were created by brushing acetone onto the surface of 1/2" EPS with chip brushes to create a rough-cut timber look.
