Lighting Design
The Mechanics of light are relatively straight forward. Photometric data can be programmed into an excel sheet or graphically represented with a scaled drawing. These concepts are so intuitive that some schools don't even teach them-- which is really unfortunate.
The tenants of Design for Lighting, are very much the same as Scenic, just in a different manifestation. It all starts with the script.
Lighting design is a juggling act between knowing your atmosphere, primary perspective, and thematic trajectory. The Lighting Designer is tasked with creating something thematically appropriate, aesthetically pleasing, and informative to the narrative.
